Different paths to digital convenience
Digital displays influence the interior design, controls, and environment of modern cars. In this article, we examined the different approaches taken by Škoda Auto, Tesla, and Mercedes-Benz. For comparison, we selected the Enyaq iV 80 from Mladá Boleslav, the American Model 3, and the EQS from Mercedes-Benz in Germany
1. Minimalist Tesla
Tesla prefers a design with fewer buttons combined with a 15-inch central display. Quite cleverly, the left third of this display is dedicated to basic information such as speed, warning lights, and navigation information. The central display is horizontally oriented and positioned so that it is partially within the driver’s field of view. Newer models feature an additional 8-inch screen for rear passengers to control the climate, media, and other selected functions.
Display Layout
- The Model 3 features a 15-inch main touchscreen.
- Newer models feature an additional 8-inch screen for rear passengers to control climate, media, and other functions.
*Tesla minimizes physical controls and centralizes functions on the central panel.
2. A combination from Škoda Auto
The Škoda Enyaq iV80 combines a 5.3-inch virtual cockpit, a 13-inch central display, and an optional head-up display (HUD) that projects data onto the windshield. The cockpit and HUD display information within the driver’s field of view, while the center panel is dedicated to infotainment and the front passenger. The controls are spread across multiple panels for clarity. An interesting feature is that you can view, for example, navigation information or instructions in three different locations at the same time.
Display Layout
- In front of the driver is a 5.3-inch virtual cockpit designed primarily to display speed, navigation, and driver assistance information.
- The infotainment system is controlled via the central 13-inch display.
- The optional HUD projects information onto the windshield.
*Škoda’s approach distributes functions across several specialized displays.
3. The Spacious Mercedes
The Mercedes Hyperscreen consists of three OLED panels—a 12.3-inch screen for the driver, a 17.7-inch screen in the center, and a 12.3-inch screen for the front passenger—with the option to install panels in the rear row as well. Each screen has its own controls for contrast and personalization. The system spans the dashboard from the left A-pillar to the right.
Display Layout
- The 12.3" display in front of the driver shows data.
- The 17.7" central display controls functions.
- The 12.3" display for the front passenger is primarily intended for the passenger in the front passenger seat.
*This approach by Mercedes integrates multiple screens into a single, nearly seamless surface.
